Black Friday fails to live up to the hype in Ireland
Black Friday “was short on fireworks, as discounts
on electronics, clothing and other products failed to draw big crowds” the
Irish Independent newspaper reports. Lynn Drumgoole, of trade group Retail
Excellence Ireland, commented that the discounts on offer did not entice enough
customers to part with their cash. “There was a good bit of activity, but
overall it didn't generate a massive increase in spending”, she added.
According to Richard Guiney, CEO of business group DublinTown, “Footfall is up,
and people are definitely spending more, but they're still diligent in what
they buy”.
Many Croatian online shoppers happy to shop internationally
A study conducted during autumn 2015 by
price-comparison website Ceneje Group has found that 24% of online shoppers in
Croatia buy exclusively from local retailers. 32% make less than half their
online purchasers from foreign retailers, while 24% make more than half but
less than 90% of their purchases internationally. 20% of respondents said they
made more than 90% of their online purchases from foreign retailers. Meanwhile,
international e-commerce website eBay has launched in Croatia on December the
1st, providing another option for local consumers.

Human rights
via crowdsourcing
Movements.org is a crowdsourcing human-rights
platform helping human-rights activists and those fleeing dictatorships to find
people with the skills to help. In the last year, a reported 250,000+ people
have visited the site, leading to nearly 10,000 connections between people
requesting assistance and those offering it. David Keyes, a pioneer in online
human-rights activism, explained to David Bornstein, himself a social
entrepreneurship expert, why crowdsourcing for human rights fits with the
zeitgeist: “Amazon says that you don’t need to be a bookstore to sell a book
and Uber says that you don’t need to be a taxi service to drive a taxi… I
realized that you don’t need to be an N.G.O. to fight a dictator, or a
political leader to help a human-rights activist. Millions of people around the
globe have the skills to help, and they’re currently not being utilized. If we
could build a bridge between these communities, more people could be helped
than we ever thought possible.”

New consumer review website for Nigerian consumers
What is thought to be Nigeria’s first
consumer-review website, Have-your-say.ng, was launched by Abuja-based Peach
Communications during November, website Vanguardngr.com reports. Julius Ogunro,
CEO of Peach Communications, claimed that “We want consumers to exercise more
power over their shopping experience”. He added: “Providers of services will
take them more seriously if they know that the consumer can easily share his or
her experience online”.
4. MICROBLOGGING
Twitter reviews 2015
In early December, Twitter published its annual
analysis of the year’s tweets. The diversity of this year’s topics highlights
the microblog’s role as soapbox for consumer passions about politics, news,
entertainment and sport. Breaking news spreads fast on Twitter, which then acts
as a public forum for thoughts and self-expression in 140-character texts and
short videos. The Paris terror attacks, the legalization of same-sex marriage
in the US and Bruce Jenner's transformation to Caitlyn sent people rushing to twitter
in the last year. "As always, the world united this year in moments of
triumph, activism, support, and fascination," the company said in a post
on December the 6th. In the technology realm, the top trending topics revealed
interest in Apple's iPad and iPhone, music app SoundCloud, Google's Android
software and live-video app Periscope.
5. GENERATIONS Y and Z
Gen Y born between circa 1980-1994 and Generation Z, born roughly
between 1995 and 2009 and nicknamed “digital natives” – weaned on things
digital with their lifelong experience of communications and media technologies
- both often referred to as Millennials.
Spotlighting the dangers of social media addiction among UAE children
In November, Dubai saw a seminar on the behavioural
changes in children using social media. Results from a previous conference in
Glasgow suggested risks to teenagers’ mental wellbeing who engage with social
media at night. The study also showed that teenagers were reluctant to talk to
their parents about the issues they faced. Dubai teenagers were found to be
“worried about how their friends perceive them”, and Elena-Maria Andrioti, a
psychology practitioner at Dubai’s Carbone Clinic told Thenational.ae:
“Children have phones with them all the time, so online bullying can be hard to
escape”. Dr Saliha Afridi, a clinical psychologist and managing director of
Lighthouse Arabia, found that many children in the UAE suffered from
anxiety-related issues, making it important for parents to keep an eye on
behavioural changes.
6. SOCIAL NETWORKING
'Catwalking' to highlight climate change
To coincide with and support the UN Climate Summit
in Paris in late November and the first half of December 2015, the fashion
industry is ‘catwalking’ beyond the fashion runways to raise awareness
globally. With the hashtag #ClimateCatwalk, photographers, editors, stylists
and models are creating a lively conversation on social media, recording
themselves striding purposefully to draw attention to this cause. This campaign
is the idea of photography and stylist agency, Art Partner, and those posting
on it include publications like Vogue Italia, supermodels like Anja Rubik and
photographers such as Mario Testino.
7. MOBILE ONLINERS
Thai shoppers go mobile
Internet retailing is expanding rapidly due to the
combination of a tech-savvy population and the growth of mobile internet
access. Alessandro Piscini, CEO of online retailer Lazada Thailand, said:
"Half of our total online sales in Thailand now come from mobile phones, a
five-fold increase from last year”. Piscini added that health and beauty
products, electronic gadgets and apparel were Lazada’s three most popular
categories. Euromonitor International data forecasts that mobile commerce value
sales in Thailand will reach US$12.6 billion this year, up 362% growth since
2010.
